According to Xbox Live program manager John Bruno, because the cloud is designed to constantly run updates on its own at regularly scheduled times, this could cause some issues with host serves rebooting during a game.

Bruno hosted a session yesterday at GDC Next called “On Demand Compute: Power for Games,”. During this presentation, Bruno talked about the cloud-based system Xbox Live Compute that has been put into development for Xbox Live for the last 18 months. It is derived from Windows Azure technology and he conceded that the tech did receive criticism from publishers such as Ubisoft, while others such a Respawn were much more acclimated to it.

Now, Xbox Live Compute is being used by Rewpawn to offload a few elements of Titanfall’s online play in order to help them not be bogged down, such as NPC AI.

Going into further detail about the issues of the cloud updates, Bruno had this to say. “Once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted, whether your code is running or not. That’s a problematic thing for a game, and is oftentimes is in the middle of a multiplayer session, we’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case.”

This could potentially become a huge issue. Bruno was questioned on this issue as to how disruptive the updates will be, especially considering Titanfall being an online only title. They asked what would be Microsofts worst case scenario in the event of full servers completely failing.

“I can’t answer that,” he replied. “I don’t know what the guys over at Titanfall have built into their game. It’s up to the game developer. If they want to rely more on our XBLC service, we’re happy to support that. We do provide a platform for them to persist data, but that’s up to the developer to utilize that.”

Is Titanfall prepared for these sorts of issues rather than Microsoft. Can the game run without the cloud? We’ll just have to wait and see.
