French website Portail du Jeu Video reports that a 2D Prince of Persia game is in development at Ubisoft.

According to the report, the new game is being developed with the UbiArt Framework engine. The UbiArt engine was used on Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, as well as the upcoming titles Child of Light and Valiant Hearts.

Additionally, the report suggests that the Prince’s body parts will be animated separately to give him a 3D model look. Gameplay will remain as usual for the franchise, with the ability to do parkour with wall jumps and wield a sword.

It was just over a year ago that the Ubisoft Montreal CEO said the Prince of Persia franchise was “on pause.”

The Prince of Persia franchise has had an interesting life on consoles since the Sands of Time Trilogy released on PlayStation 2. While the trilogy was brought to the PlayStation 3 as an HD collection, they rebooted the series with the 2008 entry Prince of Persia, and then went back to the Sands storyline in 2010 with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands.
