With all the progress in graphical capabilities over the past decade, the pursuit of realism in video games is something that many developers are striving for. With the launch of new, more powerful consoles and the continued advancement of PC gaming, the opportunity to make realism a reality has never been closer.

While so many developers are looking to fill in the uncanny valley, I am thankful that there are still developers who cherish and honor the games that have brought us to this point. While I love to play games that push graphical limits, I will always have an everlasting and unconditional love for games that take me back to simpler times.

Here are 5 current and upcoming retro-style indie games for people who crave that old-school experience.

Shovel Knight [Available June 26, 2014 for 3DS, WiiU, and PC]

ShovelKnightShovel Knight is the first title to be developed by Yacht Club Games, but it has already made a huge splash in the gaming community. It is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure platformer that takes inspiration from classic games of yore like Zelda II, DuckTales, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, and Mega Man as well as modern hits like Minecraft.

“You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this valley with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. He wields a ShovelBlade; a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! However, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress at any cost!” (YachtClubGames.com)
