“Do the thing!! Get the stuff!! Win the game!!”

"Do the thing!"

“Do the thing!”

Sometime, in a kingdom somewhere, there is a guy who must go on a quest to do this thing and get the stuff. Prepare to meet people, do activities, and explore places. Are you ready for the challenge? Welcome to the world of SUPER WIN THE GAME!

Why do so many publishers and developers feel obligated to fill their games with unnecessary narratives and cutting-edge graphics? Sometimes, its nice to sit back and play a game that takes you back to a simpler time, a time when games spoke for themselves and pixels reigned supreme. Enter J. Kyle Pittman of Minor Key Games. This one man has decided to take a stand against the tides of trends and modern gaming movements to say, “No! Pixels are here. Pixels are now, and they will reign forever!” Ok, so he didn’t actually say that, but you get the idea.

Like many other independent developers today, Kyle worked at a larger studio until he decided it was time to break away to pursue his own ideas and work on his own personal projects. As a former developer at Gearbox Studios, Kyle has a great background in the industry, but when you work for a larger studio with massive undertakings, it can be difficult to find time for anything else. He said, “I wanted to make smaller games, and also have control on designing projects. I feel we at Minor Key Games have an advantage due to our previous experience with development.” With all the necessary skills in his tool belt and his destiny in his hands, J. Kyle Pitman has set out to change the world, revolutionize the industry, and transform gaming forever! By this, I mean he wants to make great games, and that’s all anyone could hope for.

"Get the stuff!"

“Get the stuff!”

SUPER WIN THE GAME is the 8-bit, nostalgic blast-to-the-past that is being developed by its sole creator, J. Kyle Pittman of Minor Key Games, and is set to release on October 1, 2014 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is the sequel to the hit 2012 platformer, YOU HAVE TO WIN THE GAME. This is a game that will take players back a quarter of a century to the days when the NES ruled the gaming world. Not only are the gameplay and graphics designed to look and feel like games from the NES era, but Kyle also designed the graphics display in such a way as to give the impression that players were playing the game on an antiquated ray tube television set.

When asked about the unique style and design, Pittman said,”I wanted it to look and feel as though it really existed for NES. So I actually took a real TV and pretty much studied it to get the illusion just right. The influences for this game were that of Zelda II and Metroid. I got the idea from games that I grew up playing, and I wanted to give a throwback to those classic games I played as a kid. But I also wanted to give it a touch of modern features that make it stand out.

"Win the game!"

“Win the game!”

SUPER WIN THE GAME is definitely a throwback, and it most certainly stands out. I truly love the feel of this retro-style gem. The platforming and exploration are an absolute treat for this old-school gamer. The colors, music, design, gameplay, and art style have all been purposefully crafted to feel like a genuine NES title.  While this game has taken many months to develop, Kyle revealed that the actual development time is closer to 9 years since he personally designed the game’s engine from scratch rather than using a pre-built engine to create it. This game is truly a labor of love for those who love classic games.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this game when it releases in October. I just can’t resist its classic debonair, its pixelated charm, or its retro goodness.  SUPER WIN THE GAME may seem like a simple game at first glance, but this indie platformer is much more than you realize. This is a game with the heart of a classic and the soul of the NES generation.
