Batman Arkham Knight will be the first game in the Batman series to feature an M rating. While founder of Rocksteady Sefton Hill said that their design choices were made independent of ESRB classification, he was short on details as to what specific choices were made that lead to M rating.

Luckily, we now have to full content breakdown for Batman Arkham Knight posted on the ESRB site which lists the rating summery for the game. It lists:

  • Cutscenes depict characters getting shot
  • Large bloodstains/pools of blood
  • Person torturing a character on a bloody operating table
  • Sequence showing a vehicles wheels being used to torture an enemy
  • Players can shoot unarmed characters and a Hostage
  • Neo signs reading “live nude girls” and “XXX”
  • Use of profanity

Hill previously stated that all content in the game was done so as a conscious decision in regards to the story and tone they wanted to set for the game. Rocksteady even went as far as to say they weren’t concern with making their game for a mass market if it meant interfering with they story they wanted to tell. So while it looks like Batman Arkham Knight will be a very story driven game, it will also be a bloody one at that.

Batman Arkham Knight releases on June 2, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
