Recently, I had the opportunity to play a game that has taken me back to some of the beginning days of my gaming legends. I used to play a game called Jungle Strike on the Sega Genesis; it was a game that I would play for hours on end doing whatever I wanted in some playthroughs, then attempting to beat the game in others. Whether it was failing a mission because I crashed the chopper too many times on the White House’s front lawn or scouring the ocean to kill all the sharks within the level, no matter the reason, I had a blast and I still turned out okay. After all, it was about stopping a Madman and Druglord from doing far worse things to the world! Unfortunately I haven’t really seen too many games of the same genre type or play style hit the markets. But perhaps I’ve been looking in the wrong places as a title called Project Root from OPQAM and Reverb Triple XP is on the way to PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One and it reminds me of all the things that I loved of the classic genre.

Project Root has players taking control of the F-72 Zonda Hoverfighter. You’ll take on various missions as the rebel ace Lance Rockport to take down the evil Prometheus Corporation. There are a total of eight stages in which you’ll take on enemies on the ground below and in the air. The challenges here are just as difficult as the classics of its genre. The bullets will fly here, and if you let your enemies roam about, you’ll regret it later as getting overwhelmed by their onslaught will only add to your troubles. Project Root implements some bullet hell aspects to the game, although the intensity of bullets aren’t anywhere near the insanity of a true bullet hell. There will be plenty of powerups and items for you to utilize on your missions including a beam laser to rip through your enemies and a cluster missile shot to give the enemy a taste of their own medicine!

I really appreciate the throwback to a more arcade-esque style that is presented here. You get a set amount of lives on the stage, and if you lose them all, you start the entire level over. The classic challenge got a whole lot bigger with the addition of bullet hell-esque mechanics. If you want to check it out now, Project Root is available on PC via Steam. But it is currently on the way to PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One. Get ready to launch your Hoverfighter April 28th!
