Now that eSports is becoming bigger and bigger, it seems like everyone wants a piece of the action. Who can blame them? Now Bud Light is taking that step from moving beyond traditional sports, and announcing today that it’s sponsoring an eSports team. The team is called Bud Light All-Stars. Their chosen athletes will participate in some of the most popular professional gaming titles, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm.

The beer company will be announcing their preliminary choices for athletes on May 7th at the DreamHack Austin event. In a statement, the company said its players were “carefully selected with experts in the field.”

However the exciting part for fans, you will get to ultimately choose who makes it to the final team or not. Athletes that make the final roster will be decided by the community, as fans will be be given “full control” through a voting process to take place on June 14th, during E3. American Idol-style, the five athletes with the most votes will go on to be officially named to the Bud Light All-Stars. This will all be broadcasted live on Bud Light’s Twitch channel.

The Fab Five selected to the Bud Light All-Stars team will host Twitch streams throughout the summer, participate in eSports events, and appear in a behind-the-scenes series from Machinima. The team will also compete in a three-round elimination tournament at TwitchCon 2016 in October. Bud Light says this tournament will be “unlike anything seen before”. Each round will feature “surprises,” while there will be some level of community interaction, according to the press release.

Bud Light Vice President Alex Lambrecht said in a statement,

“Bud Light has always been the beer that sports fans, regardless of what they’re watching, reach for and enjoy together. Esports is a new and exciting frontier for us and we’re looking forward to providing another opportunity to bring fans around the country together to cheer for their favorite athlete.”

I have worked hard to become the COO here at GAW and I love it. I write and stream here and I couldn't be happier. I once had a show that I produced, wrote, and co-hosted called the Wide World of Games. I also co-host a podcast called Party Up! I'm an Action-Adventurer, platformer, RPGer, and FPS kind of gamer. Quick to play any game that has magic, swordplay, and/or stealthy elements. If you can customize a character I'm in it for the long haul. Or just give me your 2D platform and I'm a happy camper. What else do you expect from a gamer with a beard and a bow tie tattoo? Seriously.
