Maxis released an update to Sims 4 today that includes and expands the character customization options featured in the game. Previously, players were restricted to certain clothing, voices, walks, and accessories based on the sex of the character they chose. Well, Maxis has said, no more of that and has chosen to erase all the gender boundaries within the game.

Clothing, hair, jewelry, and more can all now be worn by both male or female, and will apply to both the base game, as well as its many expansions. Lyndsay Pearson, the lead producer of Sims 4, had a lot to say about the changes.

The Sims 4 is a constantly evolving experience, and we’re always looking for new ways to give players more freedom in how they play with life. Players have asked us why certain hairstyles, clothing options, or voices were limited to one gender or the other. We also saw this as an awesome opportunity to continue to nurture an inclusive environment for our community. The Sims Team is a diverse group that makes a game for a diverse audience, and we want everyone to be able to create who they want.”

The new gender customization will not effect how the Sims react to the player. Players should expect the exact same gameplay they have enjoyed previously.
