As the pocket monster app is still only 48 hours old for most regions, it’s too early to tell if it have long-term success. However, so far, Pokémon Go is doing well. Very well.

Having just launched in the US, the game (and its many different microtransactions) has already risen to the very top slot on the iOS’s Top Free and Top Grossing charts.

The Top Grossing is the more important one because it tracks the amount of money generated by every app. So, that means it’s currently making more money in microtransactions than hugely successful games like Game of War, Mobile Strike, Candy Crush Saga, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans, all of which occupy spots in the top 10.

Those games have proven to have staying power however, and it’ll be key to see whether Pokémon Go has any. Nintendo’s first mobile app, Miitomo, started strong but never made it this high up the charts, nor did it have so many people using it that the server didn’t work. The unfortunate part was that Miitomo quickly lost many of its users.

Pokémon Go wasn’t made by Nintendo and is way more of a game than Miitomo ever was. It does show, however, the potential power of the named franchise exclusively associated with Nintendo platforms can have on mobile. Five more games from the company are due out by March 2017, including one based on Fire Emblem and another on Animal Crossing. It will be exciting to see that Nintendo has in store for mobile games.

I have worked hard to become the COO here at GAW and I love it. I write and stream here and I couldn't be happier. I once had a show that I produced, wrote, and co-hosted called the Wide World of Games. I also co-host a podcast called Party Up! I'm an Action-Adventurer, platformer, RPGer, and FPS kind of gamer. Quick to play any game that has magic, swordplay, and/or stealthy elements. If you can customize a character I'm in it for the long haul. Or just give me your 2D platform and I'm a happy camper. What else do you expect from a gamer with a beard and a bow tie tattoo? Seriously.
