Sonic Mania, the widely anticipated return of classic Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay is racing its way to the Nintendo Switch this year.

Sonic Mania is seen by many as a return to form for Sonic Team, expertly recapturing gameplay from the Genesis era of Sonic titles. The pixel art looks extremely reminiscent of those games, as well as the physics for how Sonic controls and the level design. Sonic Mania is both a new adventure and a lovingly recrafted old one, featuring classic stages alongside new Zones created for the game relatively seamlessly.

It also features three playable characters (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) and a new ability called the Drop Dash that allows you to manoeuvre the new Zones and the classic Zones in a whole new way. As you may have gathered from the trailer, Sonic Mania features an incredible funky soundtrack which, as the trailer itself points out, is a “celebration of the old and the new”.

Sonic Mania will arrive on the Switch in Spring 2017, and will also appear on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. You can catch all the Switch news right here.
