Hearthstone‘s Update 7.1 will overhaul the game’s ranking system and nerf two cards. According to the Blizzard post that detailed the changes, these updates “promote deck experimentation and reduce some of the feelings of ladder anxiety some players may face.”

The ranking system overhaul introduces additional Ranking Play floors, checkpoints for the player’s ranked progress within a season. Similar to how progression works for players who are Rank 20 and above, Rank 15, 10, and 5 are now Ranking Play floors.

If you’re unfamiliar with what it means, the update means players cannot slip back to Rank 6-10, if they’ve achieved Rank 5 already. Similarly, players wouldn’t fall below Rank 15 if they’ve made it to 15 as a checkpoint. According to Blizzard, these new Hearthstone ranking overhauls will “make the overall climb from rank to rank feel like more an accomplishment once you hit a certain milestone.”

Hearthstone Spirit Claws

Two cards have received nerfs. These nerfs targeted cards that are overpowered or played too commonly in the current meta. In particular, they’ve made changes to Small-Time Buccaneer and Spirit Claws.

Small-Time Buccaneer’s health was halved. According to Blizzard, “the combination of Small-Time Buccaneer and Patches the Pirate has been showing up too often in the meta.” Spirit Claws’s Mana costs increased from 1 to 2 Mana. The card has been extremely efficient at removing minions by capitalizing on cards like Bloodmage Thalnos or the Shaman Hero power, due to its low mana costs. Therefore, to prevent its overuse, these changes were deemed necessary.

Hearthstone‘s 7.1 Update will release near the end of February.
