Double Fine Productions’s cult classic Psychonauts is getting a sequel in 2018. Starbreeze Studios, known for Payday 2 and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, has stepped on board to publish, market, and distribute Psychonauts 2 for its PC and console release.

Starbreeze CEO Bo Anderson-Klint’s Bo Clint spoke about this deal. He celebrated the partnership with Double Fine, bringing up their past legacy of titles, and what it means to work with them.

Many of us gamers who’ve grown up during 70’s and 80’s have at some point come across the great games from Double Fine and Tim Schafer. Games like Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Brütal Legend are all in the list of personal all time favorites for many of us. We’re very proud to be able to add this prominent collaboration to our Publishing business. Starbreeze is looking forward to support Double Fine in bringing the new and exciting game Psychonauts 2 to young and old gamers world wide.

Psychonauts 2 Funding

The game was successfully crowdfunded via Fig, and Starbreeze will add even more funding. As part of the deal, Starbreeze will contribute $8 million of funding. To explain how it works, Starbreeze will have an initial revenue share of 85% after the marketing and publishing fees, and will receive 60% of the shares once its investment is recouped. Double Fine has 100% of the intellectual property rights to Psychonauts.

Psychonauts 2 is currently in development. Double Fine will release the game in 2018 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. For more information, you can read the development updates on Fig.
