An exciting development is unfolding for Japan’s fighting game community: the Evolution Championship Series (more commonly known as EVO) will be holding its first ever tournament in Japan– and EVO Japan’s organizers have provided a date. EVO Japan was first announced in 2010, but was postponed indefinitely following the Tohoku earthquake. At EVO 2016, we finally got confirmation that it’d happen– and at Tokyo Game Show this past year, they announced a January 2018 timeframe.

Today, it was revealed that the event will meet its January 2018 timeframe. The first ever EVO-event held in Japan will take place from the January 26 through 28, 2018. The venue for the huge fighting game tournament will be the Akihabara UDX in Tokyo.

In addition, the organizers announced a new tournament, “Sài.” Sài is a lead-up tournament to EVO and will bring Japan’s fighting game community together before the major EVO tournament.

Its main two fighting game titles will be Tekken 7: Fated Retribution and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2. There’s one more main title that has yet to be announced. This tournament will follow a double-eliminations format.

Sài will take place on May 20 through 21, 2017 at the Akihabara UDX building. It’s free to enter, so expect lots of entrants raring for a chance to show off their fighting game prowess.
