An ambitious fan project that would recreate the entire map of Red Dead Redemption into Grand Theft Auto V is now cancelled. The news comes as a huge disappointment for GTA V‘s modding scene.

The team behind the modding project, .White, posted the news to gtaforums yesterday. .White had recently uploaded a gameplay video showcasing their work, but was forced to take it down. Following suit, they wound up being forced to cancel their project.

According to the team, they were sent a cease-and-desist letter. It’s not clear if it was Rockstar or Take-Two, but it’s likelier to be Take-Two as Rockstar is a subsidiary under them.

Mr. Leisurewear, one of the modders, provided the following message:

I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted , and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project.

So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry

The highly ambitious mod would have brought the entire in-game map of Red Dead Redemption into GTA V, with some additions. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming up this year, and that may have played a role in the cease & desist.

That is retarded… why stop someone from making a MAP from one game for another game? I mean, anyone who has played the first game already knows what it all looks like, so it is not giving away any secrets… companies throw the flag way too often these days, just in case. *sigh*
