Phantom Trigger, created BreadTeam, is an up and coming pixelated “Hardcore Neon Slasher with RPG and Roguelike elements.” The game has an alpha available for download. The Alpha features 2 out of the 5 worlds, combo mechanics and gameplay close to the final cut, and an idea of what to expect from the game.

Our protagonist is Stan, and through him, we are supposed to hack and slash our way through the story. You will venture through absurd worlds, meet quirky characters, and fight hordes of monsters. As the genre suggests, this game will have its fair bit of challenges.

The game’s graphics style and gameplay are similar to that of Hyper Light Drifter, and while some seem to be upset about this and calling it a copy, such is the way of video games. Personally, I would love to see more games like Hyper Light Drifter, that’s one of my favorite Indie games and it’s great to see that Neon Slashers are becoming more mainstream.

And while yes, it does look like Hyper Light Drifter and has a protagonist that zips around the screen, the story is completely original. Handcrafted story design will go alongside the game’s rogue-like level design. The game will have multiple different branching paths and will feature different endings depending on the paths you take.

Phantom Trigger will be available for both Nintendo Switch and Steam on PC this summer of 2017. Unfortunately, there is no specific release date, but at least we have the Alpha. If you download it and play, let us know what you think! I’ve taken some time to play it, and so far my thoughts are mostly positive and can’t wait to see what the final copy will hold for us.
