If you’ve ever wanted to collect a bunch of Marvel characters and make them fight, but you aren’t great at fighting games, then Marvel Contest of Champions is the game for you. The free-to-play mobile game for iOS or Andriod, made by Kabam, is fairly simple to play. It has been on the market for a while now, however, the team is constantly creating new content for fans of all ages. Just recently they released Blades which added a few characters including Mephisto and a brand new character that Marvel and the Kabam team created, Morningstar. Below is the release trailer for this newest release.

This year at New York Comic Con, I was able to sit down with Kabam’s own Gabriel Frizzera, who was able to tell us a bit more about Morningstar and where Contest of Champions is headed. Morningstar has a pretty messy background, something totally in time for Halloween;

Morningstar is an all-new original Marvel character debuting in Marvel Contest of Champions. She started out as a bloodthirsty and tyrannical queen at the turn of the 10th century who was overthrown and imprisoned in a specially-built ‘iron maiden’ torture device made to trap the soul of the tortured beyond death. After many years, she has been given the chance for revenge by Mephisto, Lord of Lies, and her iron maiden prison has been transformed into golem-like armor as she wanders the land in search of her infamous demon sword – La Fleur du Mal – currently in the possession of Guillotine, another Marvel character that debuted in Marvel Contest of Champions.”

Coming up with new content is just part of what keeps Marvel Contest of Champions so fresh everytime you load it up. One of the other great aspects is online versus mode. Players can jump online to fight either 1v1 or 3v3 matches. As long as you have the characters to fight with you can keep going. Unfortunately, they do require a cool down after each matchup so depending on how many characters you have collected the more you can play. “There is no way you can create enough content for people to keep playing for ten years,” Gabriel told us, “It also has to be up to the community.” Having an online mode is smart on their part. It does feel awesome when you know you are playing a live person and you win. No matter how fun playing against an AI character is, there will always be a greater satisfaction beating a live opponent.

This was true seeing it live at NYCC, the community for the game is fun and lively. They cheered each other on if someone picked their favorite characters. It was great to see. “We try to create new modes to keep it interesting, and we have new modes that still want to put into the game. This is so people can create their own experience, instead of always relying on us to create a prescripted experience all the time.”

So whats next for Marvel Contest of Champions? Well, considering they just dropped a huge content package with Blades and it ties in as their Halloween type of event, it should be no surprise that Thor: Ragnarok makes its debut. That opens the door for a few new characters like movie Thor and Hela. Perhaps fans can even look forward to a War Hulk, Unfortunately, that is not confirmed. Gabriel told us that there will also be an upcoming holiday event which they like to bring in some special characters. “Next year will be our biggest year because Infinity War will be coming out and that is what we’ve been building up to since the beginning of the game.”

Fans and newcomers will have quick a bit of content to look forward to, so go download Marvel Contest of Champions now for your iOS or Andriod devices and become a powerhouse fighter. Do you already play? Who is your favorite fighter? Tell us in the comment section below.

I have worked hard to become the COO here at GAW and I love it. I write and stream here and I couldn't be happier. I once had a show that I produced, wrote, and co-hosted called the Wide World of Games. I also co-host a podcast called Party Up! I'm an Action-Adventurer, platformer, RPGer, and FPS kind of gamer. Quick to play any game that has magic, swordplay, and/or stealthy elements. If you can customize a character I'm in it for the long haul. Or just give me your 2D platform and I'm a happy camper. What else do you expect from a gamer with a beard and a bow tie tattoo? Seriously.
