It’s official, the Nintendo Switch has outsold the Wii U in less than a year of being released.

Around 14.87 million Switch units have been sold since its release in March 2017, in comparison, the Wii U sold 13.56 million units until it was discontinued.

This shouldn’t be a surprise. When the Wii U debuted it was an instant flop due to poor marketing and the name itself. The Nintendo Switch benefited greatly due to the failures of the Wii U by providing Nintendo with information on how to better market their new system.

Thanks to a strong release of new and older games the Nintendo Switch sold big and continues to do well. The most recent success, Super Mario Odyssey, sold 9 million copies by the end of December.
