According to anonymous sources, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the newest addition to Activision’s flagship first-person shooter series, will be the first in the series to not feature a single-player campaign mode.

These sources have claimed that the development for the game’s campaign would not be completed in time for its release date. Thus, Treyarch has shifted their focus to expanding on Black Ops 4‘s multiplayer, as well as their trademark Zombies mode. One source stated that this emphasis on cooperative game modes is meant to take the place of a traditional campaign.

When asked about all of this, a spokesperson for Activision simply stated that “we don’t comment on rumor and speculation. We look forward to revealing Black Ops 4 on May 17th.”

It will be incredibly interesting if this turns out to be true when Activision properly releases details for the game. After all, a huge part of the reason why the Call of Duty series rose to prominence in the first place was the games’ exceptional single-player campaigns. However, in recent years, multiplayer has definitely taken priority. On the Treyarch side of things, Zombies has been a major priority as well. So, while doing away with the campaign mode is likely to be very disappointing for some, it also wouldn’t exactly be surprising.

It should also be pointed out that the tagline for Black Ops 4 is “forget what you know.” This, obviously, will likely tie into the game’s themes, as well as further play on the element of mind control that has been present throughout the Black Ops subseries. However, it could also carry a double meaning, and imply that changes to the series’ format are coming.

It’s also worth mentioning that rumors have been flying around that suggest Black Ops 4 will introduce a battle royale mode in lieu of a campaign to capitalize on the success of games like Fortnite and PUBG.

Whatever the case may be, however, it will certainly be interesting to see what changes Black Ops 4 is going to bring to the series and, more importantly, how the series’ fans will react.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be released on October 12, 2018.
