Let’s talk about the big elephant in the room– or in this case, the big space dragon. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a Smash Bros. title bigger and better than any game in the series, so it seems that this time, there’s room for Ridley, Samus’s arch-nemesis from the Metroid series.

He’s here thanks to popular demand from “overseas fans” and his debut trailer tells you everything. He’s tough, cruel, and downright vicious guy. In a surprise ambush on Smash’s popular heroes, he brutally takes down Mega Man and Mario. His on-screen debut introduces him toying with Mario’s hat to sadistically provoke Samus. Wow, that’s some pretty dark stuff for Nintendo, huh?

A stream with the Nintendo Treehouse added some additional information about his abilities and about the development process. Thanks to IGN, you can see some commentary from the Nintendo Treehouse’s Bill Trinen and series creator Masahiro Sakurai.

Sakurai points out that he’s very tall in comparison to other characters. Because of that, it was “difficult to put him into the game in a working condition.” Because of fan outcry, the team ultimately decided to put him into the game.

His Neutral Special is a fireball. Charging it lets him shoot multiple bouncing fireballs. True to his appearances throughout the Metroid series, he’s particularly vulnerable to attacks when charging.

Next, his Up Special lets him fly diagonally, vertically, or horizontally. It’s functionally similar to Fox or Falco’s Up Special.

Ridley’s Down Special makes use of his enormous tail. Ridley can pierce his foes with his tail, just as he does in various Metroid series boss fights. Hitting your opponent with its sweet spot will hit a lot of damage. Miss it, and you’ll hit minimal damage.

Finally, his Side Special is a brutal attack where he grabs his foes and drags them against the floor. According to Sakurai, this move was inspired by his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a boss character. Functionally, it’s quite similar to Ganondorf’s Side Special, though we’re not positive if you can sadistically dunk your friends off stage with it.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch on December 7th for Nintendo Switch.
