Bethesda has officially confirmed that the upcoming Fallout 76 will not be available on Steam. Rather, the PC version of the game will use the developer’s own launcher.

This is something that had previously been alluded to at in the FAQ page for Fallout 76‘s B.E.T.A, which reads “the B.E.T.A. and the game will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and on PC (via Bethesda.net only).” Moreover, the Fallout 76 purchase page on Bethesda’s store shows the PC version of the game sporting a generic “PC Game” logo with absolutely no mention of Steam.

A Bethesda rep has now directly named the popular PC gaming platform in an e-mail, explaining that “The PC version of Fallout 76, for both the B.E.T.A. and the launch, will be available only via Bethesda.net, not on Steam.”

This news is likely to come as a huge surprise to some, given how integral Steam is in the world of PC gaming. That being said, this move did not completely come out of nowhere, and it is worth mentioning that Fallout Shelter did not find its way to Steam after almost an entire year after it launched on Bethesda.net.

Whether or not this separation from Steam will be exclusive to Fallout, or if it will carry over to Bethesda’s other popular PC franchises like The Elder Scrolls, remains unclear at the moment.

Fallout 76 will be released on November 14, 2018, for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
